Gujarat is only a few days away from witnessing a crucial assembly election. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has been in power in the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah for more than two decades, is aiming for yet another victory. The Congress party, meanwhile, is striving to make a comeback with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) also in the running. The star campaigners of the three parties, including PM Modi, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi and AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal have campaigned in various constituencies of Gujarat and the high blitz action continues with many other top leaders involved.
As many as 1,621 candidates are in the fray for 182 seats in the Gujarat assembly election, scheduled for December 1 and 5. In the first phase of the poll, a total of 788 candidates will contest for 89 constituencies. Of these, 70 are women and 339 are independents. A total of 833 candidates, including 69 women and 285 independents, will contest for 93 seats in Phase-2.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has said that the counting of votes and announcement of the results of the Gujarat assembly poll will happen on December 8.
