French singer Kendji Girac, winner of The Voice France, was shot in the chest and is in serious condition. However, authorities say his life is no longer in danger.

The incident occurred at a traveller site in Biscarrosse, about 50km from Bordeaux, early in the morning.

Reports suggest that Girac may have mishandled the firearm himself. He was rushed to a hospital in Bordeaux for treatment.

While the investigation is ongoing, police have not ruled out any possibilities.

Girac, whose real name is Kendji Maille, grew up in the Catalan Gypsy community. He gained fame in 2013 with a cover song and won The Voice France the following year. He has released multiple albums and his music videos have millions of views on YouTube.

The shooting happened near a Traveller community camp where Girac had been staying.

Despite being a prominent figure in the Gypsy community, Girac’s popularity extends beyond, thanks to his music and clean-cut image.

French TV host Cyril Hanouna expressed shock and support for Girac, describing him as incredibly kind and always smiling.
