Efforts to Clear Baltimore Bridge Collapse Enter Complex Phase: Governor’s Insights
Maryland Governor Wes Moore described the monumental task ahead for crews working to clear the debris of the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge and the cargo ship that caused it, emphasizing the critical importance of reopening the Port of Baltimore and ensuring the safety of recovery operations. Speaking at a press conference, Moore highlighted the enormity of the challenge, stressing the long timeline expected for the cleanup efforts.
The arrival of the largest crane on the Eastern Seaboard and three heavy lift vessels signifies a significant step in the cleanup process. These resources are essential for removing the wreckage, which includes a 984-foot cargo ship and a tangled steel frame. Moore underscored the urgency of reopening the vital shipping channel and restoring traffic through the port, emphasizing the substantial impact on the economy.
The cargo ship, comparable in size to the Eiffel Tower, has been burdened by up to 4,000 tons of steel frame since the incident, complicating recovery efforts. Tragically, eight construction workers were involved in the collapse, with only two survivors and the bodies of two others recovered.
