Human remains were found near an apartment complex where a 21-year-old Texas college student, Caleb Harris, disappeared in March, according to police reports.

The discovery was made when a Corpus Christi city worker, conducting routine maintenance, spotted the remains inside a 40-foot-deep well on Monday and immediately alerted authorities. Caleb Harris, a student at Texas A&M University in Corpus Christi, had vanished on March 4 after leaving his campus housing to pick up an Uber Eats order around 3 a.m.

Emergency responders from the city’s fire department were called in to assist in retrieving the remains from the well, located within a wastewater collection plant. According to the Corpus Christi Caller-Times, the well was drained to facilitate the recovery operation, and the remains were subsequently sent to the medical examiner’s office for further examination.

Police noted that the area where the remains were found had been previously searched extensively shortly after Caleb Harris was reported missing.

“This whole area has been searched many times over,” a spokesperson from the Corpus Christi Police Department told local media.

Detectives are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding how the remains ended up in the well. Initial assessments suggested that there were no apparent signs of homicide associated with the remains, as stated in a police news release.

“The remains, which were in an advanced state of decomposition, did not show obvious signs of foul play,” the release stated. Due to the condition of the remains, the medical examiner’s office was unable to determine the cause or manner of death, nor could they immediately confirm the identity of the individual.

The remains have been sent to the University of North Texas Center for Human Identification (UNTCHI) for DNA analysis in hopes of identifying the deceased.

Caleb Harris, originally from New Braunfels, had left his residence on the morning of March 4 to retrieve his Uber Eats delivery but never returned. The following day, his roommate found the undelivered order outside their apartment door. Harris had left his keys and wallet inside the apartment.
