Northern Ireland’s further education (FE) lecturers have received a better pay offer, aiming to improve their salaries and conditions. The offer includes a starting salary increase from £24,496 to £30,000. Additionally, there’s an 8.4% pay rise for all lecturers, along with an extra £1,000 for everyone else’s pay in 2023/24.

The previous offer, which only included a 5% raise and a one-time payment of £1,500, was criticized by the lecturers’ union for not being good enough.

Economy Minister Conor Murphy explained that the colleges were able to make this new offer because of a revised funding plan. He emphasized the importance of avoiding delays in awarding qualifications, which could happen due to ongoing industrial action.

Lecturers were disappointed with the earlier offer, especially since it was much lower than the deal accepted by school teachers. The teachers’ agreement for 2021-2023 included a total increase of 10.4% in salaries, plus an additional £1,000 added to their pay scales.

The disparity between the offers for lecturers and teachers has been criticized by various groups. The new offer for FE lecturers aims to bridge this gap and provide fairer compensation.
